Lactation Consultant

Are you struggling with breastfeeding your baby?

Our dual-certified Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS) and Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) can help you meet YOUR breastfeeding goals. Our therapist will assess you and your baby and work with you to determine the best plan of action. Breastfeeding requires much more than a good latch and milk supply, and it only works if it is working for both parent and baby. Our CBS/SLP has the knowledge and training to assess the breast, latch, positioning, and all things milk supply, as well as your baby’s oral motor strength and range of motion necessary for safe and efficient feeding.

Signs to Watch For When Feeding Your Baby

Signs of breastfeeding problems:

  • Nipple pain and damage
  • Poor milk transfer or weight gain
  • Shallow latch
  • Mastitis or clogged ducts
  • Extreme gassiness
  • Breast or bottle refusal
  • Low milk supply
  • Creased, flattened or “lipstick” nipples after feeding
  • Cracked, blistered or bleeding nipples
  • Frequent engorgement, clogged ducts, or mastitis
  • Extreme gassiness

Signs of oral motor weakness during a breast or bottle feed:

  • Frequent pulling off or pausing
  • Milk dribbling out the sides of their mouth
  • Tongue clicking
  • Gulping
  • Short feeds
  • Wanting to nurse/feed an hour or so after stopping (growth spurts are an exception)
  • Difficulty transitioning to bottles
  • Trouble using a pacifier

Have you been told your baby has a tongue or lip tie? Is your baby “clicking” when they feed?

Sometimes what appears to be (or sounds like) a tongue or lip tie is actually just a tight muscle. Our lactation consultant has the training and experience to help relax that muscle to help determine if surgery is necessary or not. You cannot un-cut a muscle, but you can see if it responds to treatment before cutting.

What to Expect at a Lactation Evaluation

At Summit Pediatric Therapy, we have a dedicated lactation treatment room designed just for feeding/nursing babies. We offer a private entrance and a cozy surrounding to make your visit welcoming. You will meet with our lactation consultant who will get to know you and your baby. She will talk through your goals, the challenges you are having, and work together to make a manageable plan on how to move forward. She knows first-hand it can be overwhelming in the moment and hard to remember five minutes later what was discussed. You will leave with a handwritten Plan of Care. She will also complete a report for you (Lactation) and your baby (Speech) that will be sent to you via email. She will also send your baby’s report to your healthcare provider to keep them in the loop with your baby’s feeding needs.

Parent Testimonials
As a parent of a child with autism, I've always wanted him to be able to create meaningful friendships with kids his age. From the first time my son walked into Summit Pediatric Therapy, he was made to feel warm and welcome. His pediatric therapists worked tirelessly to help him develop the skills to start creating friendships. We are thankful for the life skills they helped him develop.
